Moyes confirms Everton’s return following a meeting with Moshiri.

David Moyes has revealed how close he was to returning to Everton.

David Moyes revealed that he was close to returning to Everton before joining West Ham United.

Moyes was appointed Manchester United manager in 2013 as the successor to the iconic Sir Alex Ferguson after 11 years at Goodison Park, where he received much accolades for his performance with the Blues. Moyes’ tenure at Old Trafford, on the other hand, did not go as planned, as he was fired after less than a season in command.

After leaving Sunderland, the Scot returned to management with Real Sociedad. Moyes then took over at West Ham in November 2017, only to be fired at the end of the season.

Although Moyes returned to the London Stadium 18 months later, things could have gone very differently for the 60-year-old. That’s because, prior to being approached by the Hammers, Moyes was on the verge of returning to Goodison Park, with the Blues looking for a new manager following the sacking of Marco Silva, only for Carlo Ancelotti’s departure from Napoli to throw a spanner in the works.

Napoli dismiss Carlo Ancelotti | MARCA in English

“I had actually been in Germany with Farhad Moshiri to take the Everton job when I was offered the West Ham job,” he admitted to beinSPORT.

“The phone rang, and it was David Sullivan, who was in the midst of a meeting with Everton.” ‘I can’t speak just now,’ I had to say.

“But Carlo Ancelotti was fired by Napoli that night, and they changed course, despite the fact that I was supposed to sign the day before – I had told David.”

“But Everton didn’t contact me again the next day, so I called David and said, ‘If it’s still there,’ and it couldn’t have gone better – it was the right choice.”
