Tomas Soucek has advised West Ham teammate Michail Antonio that he needs to score more goals if the Hammers are to finish above Liverpool in the Premier League this season. Antonio’s recent statements raised a few eyebrows ahead of the Hammers’ trip to Anfield this Sunday.

“I’m going to back myself against Liverpool,” Antonio remarked on the Footballer’s Football Podcast. “You know what, I believe we will finish higher than Liverpool this season.” I’m going to put it out there.

“I watched the game [Liverpool 3-1 Wolves] because it was before our game, and Wolves could have won!” They had a number of options. This weekend, we have them, and it’s a six-pointer. We have them!”

But Soucek argues that Antonio, who has never scored more than 10 goals in a single Premier League season, must first improve his goal-scoring form after only finding the back of the net five times in 33 league games last season. “Micky conducts numerous interviews.

It’s fantastic that he has this show, but we need to follow through on what he’s saying. If it turns out to be true, I’ll be overjoyed, but he’ll need to score a lot of goals to put us ahead of Liverpool.”

Following the £105 million departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal, West Ham’s midfield, including Soucek, has been drastically changed this summer. The Hammers utilized the money from Rice’s transfer to bring in three new midfielders: James Ward-Prowse (£30m), Edson Alvarez (£35.4m), and Mohammed Kudus (£38m).
