Sunderland rapist sentenced to 15 years in prison after victim reveals years of suffering

Frederick Newton, of Hylton Road, Sunderland, was found guilty of rape following a trial and has now been sentenced to prison.

Frederick Newton, 61, of Hylton Road, Sunderland, was taken to court after his victim came forward to report non-recent abuse. After speaking with Newton, who claimed he was an innocent man, Newton was charged with two counts of rape of a female under 16. Newton was sentenced to 15 years in prison after his victim urged the judge to lock him up to protect others.

He maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty, but a jury found him guilty of two rape offences after a trial in June this year at Newcastle Crown Court. Last month, a judge heard a specially-written statement from the victim, in which she spoke of the years of anguish she’d undergone and requested the judge to consider imposing the highest penalty on Newton in order to “protect others from him.”

He was sentenced to 15 years in jail on August 14 and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for Life. He was also issued a restraining order barring him from contacting the victim again, as well as a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

The girl was lauded for her bravery by Det Con Amy Burridge of Northumbria Police’s safeguarding department, who headed the inquiry. “What she went through has understandably haunted her for years,” she said.

“Coming forward, having to relive those experiences and contribute as part of a trial and court proceedings was difficult for the victim, but her bravery and desire to keep others safe shone through.” I want to praise her for her bravery, dignity, and concern for others, and I sincerely hope that this punishment brings her peace.”

“This case demonstrates that it is never too late to speak up and that justice is possible, no matter how much time has passed,” the officer continued. If you’ve been suffering in silence, now is your chance to speak out.”

Anyone wishing to report sexual abuse can do so by dialing 101 or submitting a report through the force’s website. Visit the Northumbria Police website for more information and assistance.
