Jonny Evans praised Andre Onana for seeking to talk to the media following his gaffe against Bayern Munich, but believes the Manchester United goalkeeper shouldn’t be too hard on himself.
With the support of centre-back Evans, who started his first United game in eight years, Onana kept his second clean sheet of the season in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Burnley. In the previous encounter, though, Onana made a handling error that led to Bayern’s first goal in their 4-3 Champions League victory.
Following the game, the Cameroonian star confronted the cameras and accepted responsibility for the setback, calling it one of his “worst games.” “It’s a difficult situation for us, especially for me because I’m the one who let the team down,” he stated. We simply have to move on. This is the life of a goalkeeper, and if we didn’t win tonight, it was all my fault.”
Evans stated that he has seen many such situations in his lengthy career, including some of his own creation, and that Onana should not be too hard on himself. He contrasted his beginnings to that of predecessor David de Gea, who committed a slew of mistakes in his debut season at the club before going on to have a long tenure.
