The England international joined the Baggies in January from Premier League side Fulham after failing to make an impact at Craven Cottage under Marco Silva. His time in the West Midlands, on the other hand, has not been particularly joyful.

The player has spent the majority of the season on the bench. Chalobah was dropped after starting on the opening day at Ewood Park in a 2-1 loss to Blackburn Rovers, with the manager opting to use Alex Mowatt, Okay Yokuslu, and Jayson Molumby over the ex-Watford man.

Corberan revealed what it will take for Chalobah to return to the starting eleven at his news conference ahead of today’s match away at high-flying Preston North End [quotes via Birmingham Live]:

“What happens will be heavily influenced by how we grow.” What I’ve seen in Chalobah is significant; I really like how he’s behaved this week. I enjoy it when players respond by working even harder than before in order to have more opportunities to play.

“After that, when they have opportunities to play, they must work even harder to get more minutes in the next game.” That is the challenge for everyone, not just Chalobah,” he concluded.

“When he plays, he struggles to maintain his team position.” They have a week to prepare if they are unable to utilise this opportunity in the starting XI or from the bench.

“I can’t tell you what will happen in football, but what happens will be related to what the players show when they have the opportunity to play.”

Chalobah’s contract expires in less than a year, and he’ll be a free agent at the end of the 2023/24 season unless Corberan has a complete change of heart.

The boss does not appear to be interested in the former Chelsea man, therefore it may be best for his career if he seeks a move away in January.
