Players that might depart

The main question here is the likely departure of Tom Doedee, whose ACL injury has cast doubt on his future. Is someone willing to provide him with the long-term security he seeks? It might be Brisbane or Collingwood rather than the Crows, with the Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph claiming on Saturday that a five-year, $3 million agreement is expected.

“It’s a lot to bring in a player off a knee reconstruction,” he said on Fox Footy, adding that Doedee will miss the first half of the 2024 season.

Doedee would love to stay but may be unable to. Shane McAdam has sought a move to Melbourne, with the Crows initially requesting a South Australian player in exchange, such as Harrison Petty or Tom Sparrow, though this appears doubtful. GWS has been interested in signing Elliott Himmelberg and pairing him with brother Harry.

AFL trade news 2023: Mason Redman signs five-year deal with Essendon | The Australian

Given they should’ve played finals anyhow, and having missed out on No.1 target Mason Redman, who re-signed with Essendon, it appears Adelaide won’t be able to land the big fish this year – despite successful moves for Jordan Dawson and Izak Rankine.

We’re sure they’d love to add another dynamic midfielder, but who is available?

Could they consider Collingwood peripheral players like South Australian Josh Carmichael or Finlay Macrae as depth alternatives after delisting former first-rounder Jackson Hately (who simply didn’t work out in Adelaide)? Four clubs, including the Crows, have expressed interest in Gold Coast forward Mabior Chol, who led the side to a VFL flag but fell out of favour at senior level.
