Jaxon Binns has been named the Carlton Reserves’ VFL Best and Fairest for 2023.

Jaxon Binns has won the 2023 Carlton VFL Best and Fairest in just his first season with the Blues.

Binns, who was selected with pick 32 in the 2022 AFL Draft, appeared in 17 VFL games this season, displaying his quickness and running skills throughout.

The 18-year-old was a key player on the wing, with his greatest performance coming in Round 3 against North Melbourne, when he had 31 disposals, four tackles, and two goals.

Binns was named to the 2023 VFL Team of the Year in his first year of VFL participation, ranking second in the competition for kicks per game. He was the only first-year draftee to be named to the representative side.

Nothing could separate Paddy Dow and the retiring Lachlan Plowman from second place, which they deserved following steady 2023 seasons.

Why this weekend is the biggest game of Paddy Dow's AFL career

Dow’s constant ball-winning skills was on full display throughout the season, with the Carlton Reserves relying on his ability to impact the game in 2023.

Plowman’s varied ability to play on both tall and short opponents, as well as his leadership on a youthful Blues team, were crucial features of his defensive game. He was praised for his ability to have an impact on the game while also helping his colleagues improve.

Coming in third place, VFL-listed Ned Cahill – a regular for the Blues – had another good season, giving energy and excitement throughout the year.

The 22-year-old has cemented his place in the club as a small forward, co-leading the team in goalkicking with Ben Ronke. His greatest performance came against Sandringham in Round 5, when he had 21 disposals and four goals in a match-winning performance.

Heath Ramshaw, a promising player in the Navy Blue, was named Best Young Player after an impressive season.

The agile teenager found a home in the middle, where he began on-ball play and played important, disciplined duties for his club. His ability was on display in Carlton’s Round 12 encounter against Essendon, where he collected 33 disposals and a goal.

Ben Ronke received the Coaches’ Award in his first year at the club for his effect both on and off the field. Ronke led with wisdom, and the assistance he provided to the squad’s younger players was crucial.
