Washington Commanders had bizarre statistic during loss to Bears
The Washington Commanders were humiliated 40-20 by the Chicago Bears on Thursday night. They went behind 27-3 in the first half and gradually began to claw their way back in the second half to make things look acceptable. What’s more intriguing is what occurred to the Commanders’ offensive when they fell behind.
According to Nathan Jahnke of Pro Football Focus, the Commanders dropped back to throw 55 times in a row to end the Week 5 contest. They did it without a single planned run.
The run began with a 3rd-and-9 conversion at the Chicago 38 with 8:49 remaining in the second quarter.
The Washington Commanders dropped back to pass 55 straight times without a designed run tonight, from 8:49 in the 2nd quarter until the end of the game. That is the most for a team in game that PFF has data for (back to 2006)

Commanders quarterback Sam Howell scrambled a few times, but those were not planned runs, explaining the statistic.
Despite the fact that Washington fell behind in the game, not having a single planned run is a terrible approach. It makes it easy for the defense because they don’t have to worry about a specific style of play.
Howell went 37/51 for 388 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Washington ran 10 times for 29 yards as a team. Brian Robinson Jr. ran six times for 10 yards while Howell ran four times for 19 yards.
