Matt Doherty’s former team mate issues a one-word reaction following Wolves-Aston Villa controversy

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier expressed his displeasure on Twitter following the penalty debate that occurred during Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw at Wolves on Sunday.

When ex-Spurs player Matt Doherty pushed Ollie Watkins in the area as he attempted to shoot in the second half, Aston Villa felt they should have been awarded a penalty.

The returning Wolves right-back clearly prevented Ollie Watkins from having a clean shot on goal, as his effort was scuffed and hit the side netting.

The on-field referee and VAR both concluded that no foul was committed, but Eric Dier clearly disagrees on Twitter.

Ex-referee Dermot Gallagher mentioned the incident on Sky Sports over the weekend, and Matt Doherty responded by saying ‘never’.

And, as you can see below, his former Tottenham teammate responded to that tweet with a simple one-word statement.

Ollie Watkins’ penalty appeal

Aston Villa’s penalty appeal is valid.

Alan Shearer, the all-time leading scorer in the Premier League, may have been playing as a striker, but he believed Villa were unlucky and that a penalty should have been given.

In the end, Watkins was prevented from making a clear attempt on goal, and Doherty knew exactly what he was doing.

Given the outcome, it might have had a significant impact on the game, but this season, on-field refs and VAR have made far worse errors than the one from Molineux.
