A dismal performance from the ‘Boys in Green’ left Ireland with just three points in qualification heading into their final encounter against Gibraltar.

Matt Doherty has been blamed for the defeat, with questionable defence in the first half effectively terminating the game.

It was a frustrating result for both the national team and Doherty, but it was important that he played in the legs.

But how did the Irish press react to his performance? We had a peek…

Matt Doherty falls short against Greece.

According to the Irish News, “Doherty looked 60 percent fit against Greece.” While giving him a 4/10.

While Balls IE gave the defender another negative rating, saying, “Doherty was perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty after tangling with a Greek player in the Irish box.” At times, he linked up nicely with Ogbene down the right wing, but his final pass simply failed him in crucial positions much too frequently.

“He also didn’t get much credit for his defending on Greece’s second goal.” His lack of effect continued in the second half, with the Wolves man looking very much like a player who has been deprived of playing time this season.” Doherty received a 4/10 rating as well.

Doherty’s “ponderous play at both ends” was also panned by the Irish Independent.

More game time for the Wolves is required.

Doherty hasn’t played for Wolves yet this season, but that should change.

As the fixtures pile up, we see no reason why Gary O’Neil shouldn’t use him more to get his fitness back on track.

He would be a terrific option for Wolves even at center-back in a back three.

So, ideally, the next time he is called up for international duty, he will impress and not be chastised for his lack of match fitness.
