Saudi Pro League clubs are eyeing St. Louis City SC Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel following his breakout season in Major League Soccer.
Two Saudi clubs are apparently interested in hiring the sports director of St Louis City FC, which currently leads the Western Conference.
- Sporting director has spurned Saudi interest
- Also turned down Premier League offers
- St Louis has clinched a playoff spot
WHAT OCCURED? According to The Athletic, two clubs are keeping an eye on Pfannenstiel, whose MLS team is presently leading the Western Conference in its maiden season. The former Hoffenheim scouting director reportedly turned down offers from both West Ham and Nottingham Forest this summer, and is claimed to be content in MLS, with no imminent ambitions to relocate abroad.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Despite fielding a team devoid of prominent European stars, St Louis City FC has won a playoff position and an eight-point lead atop the Western Conference. The hire of a former New York Red Bulls assistant coach, who has managed a young group peppered with international veterans, has helped the expansion franchise establish itself as a real competitor in the league.
WHAT COMES NEXT? On Saturday, St. Louis will visit Sporting KC in an attempt to maintain their lead in the Western Conference heading into the playoffs this fall.
