Jim Harbaugh finally addresses the Michigan sign-stealing probe, as well as the state of his contract: ‘Let it play itself out.’
An NCAA inquiry into an alleged sign-stealing scam has been launched against Michigan.
Jim Harbaugh, the coach of the University of Michigan, has finally spoken out about the NCAA’s investigation into extensive claims of sign stealing within the organization. Connor Stalions, a suspended staffer who allegedly used camera equipment at many games featuring Big Ten opponents and potential College Football Playoff candidates, has been the face of the story thus far. However, Harbaugh may face consequences based on his knowledge of the purported plot.
“You just have to let it play out,” Harbaugh told reporters on Monday. “Cooperate with the investigation and watch how it unfolds.” The team has too much of a one-track mind to indulge in all the speculation.”
Over a three-year span, Stallion allegedly purchased tickets for at least 30 games at a dozen Big Ten stadiums as well as locations containing prospective College Football Playoff contenders. Furthermore, a former Division III coach claims that Stalions paid him to attend two games at Penn State and one at Rutgers over the last two seasons in order to record signs exhibited on the sidelines of future opponents.
TCU, Michigan’s opponent in last season’s Fiesta Bowl national semifinal, allegedly knew about the sign-stealing attempts and utilized ‘dummy signals’ in the game. To advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship, the Horned Frogs defeated the Wolverines 51-45.
NCAA investigators arrived on Michigan’s campus a week ago to search electronic devices and interview staff members.
The dispute also comes amid allegations that Harbaugh and Michigan are negotiating a new contract that would make him the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten. According to the Wall Street Journal, the offer was withdrawn, but Harbaugh rejected the allegation, citing a university regulation that prohibits workers from commenting on contract discussions until they are finalized.
“I wouldn’t say that’s accurate,” Harbaugh remarked.
Michigan returns to action after a bye week in Week 10 against Purdue.
