There have been a few pleasant surprises this fall for Michigan football and one of them is the emergence of Jaydon Hood at linebacker. Michigan football has incredible linebacker depth

Recently, there has been plenty of chatter about how Michigan football could have a shot at breaking Georgia’s NFL draft record.

Some have suggested, such as Jim Nagy from the Senior Bowl,  that as many as 20 Wolverines could get drafted, which is a reflection of the incredible depth Michigan football has heading into the 2023 season.

That’s incredible depth and it’s all over the field. The offensive line has a bunch of players that are good enough to be drafted, maybe as many as nine. Michigan’s defensive line is super deep, especially when you consider that Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham are just sophomores.

However, another position that’s started to emerge as a real strength is linebacker. It’s funny that as recently as last season, at the start anyway, some Michigan football fans worried about the strength of the position.

The linebacker depth chart is incredible

I haven’t been worried since Junior Colson arrived. I’ve said he was going to be an early pick since he signed and this season will help that prediction come true.

Ernest Hausmann was another major addition and as a sophomore, he’s got elite potential. Michael Barrett is an NFL player still in college. His emergence last season was fun to watch and the Wolverines finally found the perfect role for him.

Jimmy Rolder, when healthy, is a stud, and now, Jaydon Hood has emerged as another starting-caliber linebacker. Here’s what Jim Harbaugh said recently about Hood via 247 Sports:

“The guy who I’d say who has asserted himself the most is Jaydon Hood. As far as where he was last year to where he is now. He’s right there in the mix in special teams and defensively.”

Hood was a four-star linebacker out of high school. He hasn’t played a ton but it sounds like he has a chance to get on the field this season, especially on special teams.
