“It’s difficult to play against them (Boston) and it’s a good challenge,” San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama said about the Celtics. “I think we learned today. They made very few mistakes and that’s inspiring. We haven’t been winning every game so far and it’s not a problem to try different things.”

San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama has made it clear since being drafted No. 1 overall this past summer that he’s after winning championships.

But it’s clear that his Spurs are far away from that goal after losing to the championship-hopeful Boston Celtics 134-101 on Sunday night.

“It’s difficult to play against them (Boston) and it’s a good challenge,” Wembanyama said. “I think we learned today. They made very few mistakes and that’s inspiring. We haven’t been winning every game so far and it’s not a problem to try different things.”

If the Spurs are going to try and reflect a model of play, the Celtics are a good team to try and mimic. Boston holds the NBA’s best record at 26-6 and have played some meaningful basketball for each year in Jayson Tatum’s career.

Granted, it’s far easier said than done.

The Celtics are a team filled with veterans, most of whom have a lot of experience playing together. The same can’t be said for the Spurs, who boast one of the youngest rosters in the league. On top of that, the team is revolving around Wemby, who only has 20 or so games of experience in the NBA.

As unfortunate as it sounds, the Spurs need two things … time and reps. That only comes with a bit of patience. As much as San Antonio wants to be good now, the team needs to go through the motions in order to get where it wants to be.
