REPORT: 27-year-old Wolves star player reportedly set to switch clubs, he wants out right now

27-year-old Wolves star player reportedly set to switch clubs, he wants out right now

Wolves attacker Goncalo Guedes is currently on loan at Benfica, but he is expected to leave and join Villarreal until the end of the season.

Goncalo Guedes is an unnoticed player at Wolves.

In the summer of 2022, the Old Gold secured the £27.5 million signing of the Portuguese international.

He appeared for the Premier League team 18 times in his debut season, scoring twice, and was loaned out to Benfica in January 2023.

Since then, his career has continued to deteriorate, and despite only scoring once in 12 Liga Portugal outings, Benfica chose to bring him back this season – a choice that has proven disastrous.

The 27-year-old has yet to score in 14 appearances for the Portuguese giants and is now apparently ‘pushing his way out’ of the club, with Villarreal willing to take him on loan until June.

Although a deal is yet to be agreed between the two clubs about Guedes moving to Villarreal, ‘barring unforeseen circumstances’ he will join the Yellow Submarine.

That is according to Spanish publication El Periodico Mediterraneo, who claim that an agreement is in place for the Wolves player to make a switch to the Spanish giants.

The outlet claims that Guedes is “forcing his way out” of Benfica while everything still indicates that he will join Villarreal next week, despite the Eagles manager Roger Schmidt stating the striker is “very important”.

Regardless of how he does in Spain, the Wolves attacker will likely leave Molineux in the summer anyway.

Guedes, unfortunately, is one of the reasons why the club are in such a mess with financial fair play having overspent on players who have underperformed.

Wolves need to get Guedes off the books

Once the summer rolls around, the Portuguese star will likely wave goodbye to his time in the Premier League.

After arriving at Molineux on the back of a season where he produced 13 goals and six assists for Valencia, it just hasn’t happened for him since, and his recent loan failures only exasperate the need to cash in.

At the age of 27, Guedes still has a chance to deliver on the potential that his formative years promised, but that isn’t expected to be with Wolves.

O’Neil has managed to get a tune out of record-signing Matheus Cunha while forward Hwang Hee-Chan is in the form of his life.

Indeed, the best course of action for both parties is to get him off the wage bill and invest the fee they receive into other areas of their squad.
