With starting quarterback Daniel Jones and backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor both sidelined by injuries this season, the Giants did not have much luck at quarterback.

And according to Broncos head coach Sean Payton, the Giants tried to employ a familiar face after Jones suffered his season ending ACL injury. Speaking with Daniel Jones and Eli Manning on Friday’s “Up Adams Show,” Payton said that Davis Webb, who is currently Denver’s quarterbacks coach, was contacted by the Giants.

“Davis received a call after you got hurt this year asking if you could return to play,” said Payton. “And I’m like, ‘You took this job, Davis.'” You are a coach. In addition, there is a rule in our league that prohibits you from playing if you sign a one-year coaching contract.

“Anyway, I had assumed the Giants would be our new quarterback coach.”

Whether Payton was making a joke or not is unknown.

In the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Giants selected Webb. Before joining the Giants again in 2022, he played for the Jets in 2018 and the Bills for a while. In the Giants’ season-ending game against the Eagles that year, he started his first NFL regular season game because
