Parramatta Eels hooker Josh Hodgson has retired, and will move into a coaching role with the Club effective immediately.

Josh suffered a season ending injury in May which required surgery and caused continuous problems, as a result the veteran player has had to medically retire.

Josh said he is retiring knowing he has given everything he has both physically and mentally to the game.

“I’d like to thank every Club I’ve represented in England and Australia and all the people I’ve worked with over the course of my career. The staff behind the scenes, performance specialists, administrators, coaches and most importantly my teammates.

“Ï also want to thank the rugby league members and fans who we love playing in front of, through all the ups and downs.

“Last but certainly not least, I want to think my wife Kirby, my kids and extended family for the unconditional love and support they have given to me. They are the reason I was able to play for as long as I did, and for that I’ll be forever appreciative.”

General Manager of Football Mark O’Neill said, “It’s always sad to see a player’s career end prematurely due to injury, but thankfully Josh has enjoyed a highly decorated career in rugby league. Josh has played in many big games including an NRL Grand Final and representing his country on multiple occasions. Josh is a wonderful person who brought strong leadership and a wealth of experience in a key position when joining the club.

“Josh will add great value in his coaching role at the Eels as he has incredible knowledge of the game, a unique ability to communicate the technical elements and has a relatable experience to share with our players.” said Mark.

Josh will be joining the Eels coaching ranks as the Assistant Coaching Director for our Elite Pathways Program.

The veteran hooker has over 270 NRL and Super League games under his belt, he co-captained the Canberra Raiders in the 2019 Grand Final, and has played at the highest level in rugby league representing England at the Four Nations and 2017 World Cup.
