Edinson Cavani determined to live up to Manchester United's famed seven shirt

Edinson Cavani is a new Boca Juniors player. This has just been confirmed by the Argentinian club on their social networks with a video with several of his goals for different clubs in Europe and the Uruguayan national team.

It also included one of the iconic goal celebrations of ‘Manteca’ Martinez climbing the fence and revealing that he will wear the 10 that football legends such as Maradona, Riquelme and Tevez have worn.

The striker will be part of the Rivera club for 18 months, until December 2024. One of his main objectives will be the Copa Libertadores, a tournament that Boca have not won since 2007 and, if they win it again, they will be the joint top winners of the tournament with Independiente with seven titles each.

Valencia had already announced Cavani had been released from his contract, so his arrival at Boca Juniors was only a matter of time, since the Uruguayan had a verbal agreement with Juan Roman Riquelme that he would play there.

This is Cavani’s return to South American football after 16 years, when he left Uruguay’s Danubio (the club where he came through and became a champion) for Italy’s Palermo. He would later move on to Napoli, PSG, Manchester United and Valencia before returning to South America.

When will Cavani make his debut?

Boca’s next game is today, against Independiente in the Argentinian league. The most likely debut of the ‘Matador’ would be in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores, in which he would face Nacional of Uruguay.

n the event that this happens, there would be a striking coincidence with the return of Luis Suarez to South America, both would have debuted in the Gran Parque Central.

In the case of Suarez, it was in the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana against Atletico Goianiense of Brazil, at home. For Cavani, it would be as a visitor in his home country. But for now, the Copa Libertadores has already welcomed him
