HUGE BOOST: Wolves are given the opportunity to sign a “tremendous” player who wanted to come, since his club is now looking to sell.

Wolves are given the opportunity to sign a “tremendous” player who wanted to come, since his club is now looking to sell.

This summer, Gary O’Neil could get a great deal.

Wolverhampton Wanderers could be given a second chance to sign one of their summer transfer targets 12 months later, with a Bundesliga player reported to be available for just £8 million.

Wolves revival under Gary O’Neil

Wolves’ Premier League season has been full of highs and lows, but the Midlands club has finally found their feet under new manager Gary O’Neill. Arriving just days before the new season began following Julen Lopetegui’s departure, O’Neil has seen his side on the wrong end of several big VAR calls and dangerously close to the drop zone, only for luck to finally swing their way and their performances to begin yielding the results they deserved.

Many people predicted they’d be relegated before a ball was kicked; they’re now in 10th place, two points ahead of Chelsea, and European football remains a possibility at the conclusion of the season.

After been hampered by financial fair play over the summer, they could be more generous with their spending this time around, and they may well return for a player they missed out on a year ago.

Elvedi an option after “failed” summer transfer

Nico Elvedi: Who is the Borussia Mönchengladbach and Switzerland defender? | Bundesliga

That comes in the form of Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi, who was supposedly placed up for sale this summer.

The center-back, who can also play right back, has made over 250 appearances for Germany and 50 for Switzerland. He was on Wolves’ radar last summer, but the trade “ultimately failed” and he stayed in the Bundesliga. According to Sport Witness, he might be one of the Wolves’ returning players as his current employers aim to raise revenue through player sales.

Elvedi reportedly wanted to join Wolves previously, but the two teams were unable to agree on a deal. He conceded afterwards that it had been a’very hectic’ summer, but he signed a new contract with ‘Gladbach that will keep him in the Bundesliga until 2027. However, the contract is thought to have a release clause, and Sport Witness adds that ‘the thinking is he would be free to depart for roughly €10m’ (£8m).

Speaking to Birmingham Live last summer, German football analyst Chris Williams highlighted why Elvedi may be a fantastic addition to Molineux.

“He is a fantastic player and an excellent center back.He is a strong player who will offer some talent to the back line. I think he’d be an excellent match for Wolves. He is joining a side that is not trying to compete for the title, but rather to secure a European spot or win a domestic cup. I believe he is a good fit for it.

“He is a confident player who excels both on the ball and in the air. I believe he would complement a squad like the Wolves.”

Craig Dawson has been a terrific servant for the Molineux side, but he is now 33 years old and possibly past his prime. Beyond the veteran, O’Neil has only Max Kilman, Toti Gomes, and Santiago Bueno as alternatives in the center of the Old Gold backline, implying that reinforcements may be required.

Elvedi may provide the team with a ready-made replacement with plenty of experience to help them maintain their upward trend into the upcoming season.
