why Michigan Wolverines could disappoint in the 2024 season

Michigan had a memorable season in 2023. The Wolverines went a perfect 15-0 to capture their first national championship since 1997.

However, this offseason was marked by significant change. The most notable departure is Jim Harbaugh, who is now coaching the Chargers in Los Angeles. That allowed Sherrone Moore to take over as head coach after serving as interim coach for four games while Harbaugh was suspended earlier this season.

But the changes do not end with the coaches. Eighteen Michigan players attended the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, led by quarterback J.J. McCarthy, defensive back Mike Sainristil, and running back Blake Corum. While several familiar characters return, like Donovan Edwards and Colston Loveland, the Wolverines will face a difficult battle to repeat in 2024.

In fact, the Associated Press’s Ralph Russo wondered if UM’s expectations should be lowered slightly.

“I understand the expectations will be lowered,” Russo stated on Andy Staples On3. “I still believe they will be a top-10 preseason club. They may be around the bottom of the top ten, but they will still be among the best. And I could see Michigan finishing 8-4 next season. With the coaching change and all of the guys gone, it’s a bad mix.”

In addition to the high change on the roster and coaching staff, Russo mentioned Michigan’s schedule. The Wolverines are scheduled to play Texas, USC, and Oregon, as well as the season finale against a new-look Ohio State club.

As they prepare for the season, Russo stated that the most important question Moore and the coaching staff must solve is who will play quarterback. That will be a crucial element in determining whether Michigan can exceed their 9.5-win total, according to FanDuel.
