Pittsburgh Steelers are determined to land Proven Wide Receiver

The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking for a proven talent to join George Pickens.

The Pittsburgh Steelers sold Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers earlier this offseason, leaving a big void in their wide receiver corps, and they’re seeking for someone who can replace that output immediately.

In his most recent live chat, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette stated that the Steelers are looking for a “proven” wide receiver to replace Johnson, which he believes led them to make some phone calls about Stefon Diggs, the former Bills star traded to the Houston Texans for a second-round pick.

“I don’t know that for certain, but I would imagine, given their desire to find a proven WR, they made a few phone calls,” Dulac said in an email.

The Steelers have been actively hunting for a wide receiver to pair alongside George Pickens. They were apparently interested in trading for 49ers star Brandon Aiyuk earlier this offseason, but San Francisco general manager John Lynch ruled that out. Former Chargers wideout Mike Williams was an option before signing with the New York Jets, and Tyler Boyd, who is still unsigned, is falling more and further out of the picture.

Pittsburgh brought in two veterans to help replace the void in Quez Watkins and Van Jefferson, but neither appears to be the No. 1 or No. 2 option. Cordarelle Patterson was a late free agent signing, but he appears to fit in better as a running back for the Steelers this season.

With the free agent market drying up, the Steelers have the NFL Draft to potentially acquire a top receiver, and Dulac believes they will do so.

“Pickens will be number one. And they will select a wide receiver before the second day of the draft,” he stated.
