With National Signing Day approaching on Wednesday, the LSU football staff has seven scholarship spots still open in the 2022 class.
13 spots were filled by high school signees in the Early Signing Period, with 12 more going to transfer portal additions. Now, there are 25 signees in the boat, and the Tigers can sign up to 32 prospects this cycle.
The Tigers signed 10 Louisiana prospects in December, and there are three Louisiana prospects left on LSU’s board for Wednesday with Citizen, Lewis and Mathews.
Citizen was a one-time LSU commitment who reopened his recruitment in December following the staff changes in Baton Rouge. Auburn took the lead from there, but LSU has battled to get back into the mix with a charge led by running backs coach Frank Wilson. Citizen wrapped up his recruiting process with a visit to Auburn before trips to LSU, Florida and Miami, which all took place in the span of two weeks. Now, the four-star running back will pick from those four teams at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Lake Charles College Prep gymnasium during a ceremony that will be televised on ESPN’s Signing Day Show.
Lewis was once committed to Cincinnati and current LSU offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, but he reopened his recruitment this month and quickly landed offers from LSU, Florida and Alabama. He made official visits to all three schools over the past week, spending a weekend in Alabama before making a mid-week trip to LSU and then traveling to Gainesville this past weekend. Lewis will announce between the three schools at Westgate High on Wednesday at 11 a.m. There have still not been any Crystal Ball predictions made.
Mathews, like Citizen, is a one-time LSU commitment who now has the Tigers in his final group of teams, a list that also includes Florida and Texas A&M. Mathews is coming off back-to-back visits to Gainesville and Baton Rouge, and the state’s top-ranked uncommitted prospect will reveal his choice on CBSHQ. LSU leads the way on the 247Sports Crystal Ball.
The other three prospects still in the mix with the Tigers are all Lone Star State products in Davis-Robinson, Perkins and Douglas.
Davis-Robinson, a cornerback out of Waxahachie who landed an offer from LSU a week ago, spent this past weekend in Baton Rouge on an official visit, and now the Tigers are squarely in the mix to potentially pull off a late addition as they go up against the likes of Oregon, Houston and others. Davis-Robinson plans to announce his decision from his high school at 9:30 a.m., making it the first announcement of the day for LSU fans to keep an eye on.
Perkins, a five-star and one of the top prospects on many college big boards, will choose between LSU, Texas A&M and Florida during a ceremony at 1:15 p.m., and the announcement will be live streamed on CBSHQ. Perkins spent this past weekend in Baton Rouge on an official visit, a trip he made with his parents and a number of other family members. The Tigers have always hung around in the lead group for the New Orleans native and Houston standout, and the door swung open a final time for LSU – and others – when Perkins committed to Texas A&M earlier this month, then backed off the pledge and reopened his recruitment ahead of Signing Day.
The final out-of-state announcement on the day comes from Douglas, who will reveal his college choice from Hightower High at 1:30 p.m. Douglas, who landed an offer from LSU a couple weeks back, took in official visits to both Gainesville and Baton Rouge over the past few weeks. The lone Crystal Ball prediction is in on the Gators, meaning the Tigers will still need to close strong if they hope to snag the 6-foot-3 wideout.
