Patriots drop massive hint at NFL Draft decision as fans crave for QB

The New England Patriots are in the market for a new quarterback, but they may be prepared to disappoint supporters after a telling statement by scouting director Eliot Wolf.

New England Patriots supporters are on edge waiting for a quarterback replacement, but the team’s scouting director, Eliot Wolf, has dropped a bombshell that might leave them reeling just days before the NFL Draft.

With the Patriots set to choose third overall in Detroit on April 25, they’re in prime position to land a top quarterback prospect, with Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and J.J. McCarthy all potentially available. Many regard it as a perfect opportunity to select the guy who will lead the team back to victory once Tom Brady retires in 2020.

After a lackluster period with Cam Newton at the helm, followed by Mac Jones’ fleeting promise, which faded and led to his trade to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Patriots fans are clamouring for a new face to lead. Despite the urgency, Wolf has intimated that the Patriots may slide down the selection order instead of acquiring their next quarterback.

Wolf threw a curveball on Thursday, stating, “We’re open to anything, [both] moving up, moving down,” fueling conjecture. “We are open for business in the first round and in subsequent rounds. We have some deficiencies in the draft that we believe we should fill, and we are a draft-and-development squad.

“The more options we have, the better.” But if there is an opportunity to move up and strike, and the board recommends it, we will not be scared to do so.”

The Patriots are still expected to select a quarterback in the upcoming draft, with most mock drafts leaning that way, but they may be tempted by top-tier wide outs like Marvin Harrison Jr. or Malik Nabers at No. 3.

Alternatively, they may play the long game and trade back to get them later, especially if they like quarterbacks Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr., who are expected to go late in the first or early in the second round.

Wolf has dismissed claims that the Patriots’ roster isn’t strong enough to deal with a rookie quarterback’s early struggles. The team has added seasoned player Jacoby Brissett, who has nine years of NFL experience to the quarterback position.

“I read a lot of that storyline,” Wolf added. “I’m not really sure what that implies. We have a quality offensive line; we re-signed Mike Onwenu, David Andrews is returning, we have three youngsters that we drafted last year who are growing, we signed [Chukwuma] Okorafor from the Steelers, and we re-signed Hunter Henry.”

“[We have] a good rushing game, a solid foundation, and a solid scheme in place under coach (Andy) Van Pelt on offense. So, I believe we can support [a young quarterback].
