Alex McLeish has claimed Harry Kane could refuse to play for Tottenham against Manchester City over fears of picking up an injury.
The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 28-year-old would not want to put a potential move at risk.
Speaking to Sky Sports (9th August), Nuno Espirito Santo claimed Kane would be available to face Manchester City on Sunday.
The broadcaster has since reported the striker is set to return to training today (Friday, August 13th), provided he returns a negative Covid test.
Kane had been expected to return to the club’s training ground on August 2nd but instead arrived later that week.
However, the England international has insisted his late return was planned.
As revealed by Football Insider (August 3rd), the Tottenham talisman is desperate to leave before the transfer deadline.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed interest in Kane but the two clubs need to negotiate a price.
As such, McLeish suggested he may rule himself out of playing to ensure nothing jeopardises a potential move.
Asked if he would be surprised if Kane played against City, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I would, yeah. Is his heart really in it?
“I don’t know him personally but I know through seeing him speaking and the way he plays, he would go on the field and do everything he could for his team.
“The other risk is an injury. Can you see the player saying I’m not going to risk injury if I’m on the verge of a move?”
“That is another agenda.”
Kane is still contracted to Spurs until the summer of 2024.
He scored 33 goals and contributed 17 assists in 49 appearances for the Lilywhites last season.
