A number of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Pascal Struijk after the Leeds United defender sent a message to Harvey Elliott on Instagram shortly after Sunday’s clash at Elland Road.

An incident between the pair overshadowed Liverpool’s 3-0 win against Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Struijk was shown a red card following a challenge on Elliott. It had initially appeared that the Dutchman had won the ball, scooping it away as the Reds youngster threatened to break forward.

Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that something had gone very wrong. Elliott was left in agony and had to be stretchered off.

Struijk was clearly visibly upset once the severity became clear. And the referee subsequently decided that the challenge was worthy of a red card.

It appeared that the Leeds man’s trailing leg landed on Elliott’s ankle as he hooked the ball.

Understandably, the large majority of concern is for Elliott, who has been a revelation in the early stages of the campaign.

But plenty of Liverpool fans have sent their support to Struijk. The 21-year-old took to social media to express his regret about what happened.

He insisted that he had no intention of hurting the Reds starlet. And he suggested that he was gutted.

And in response, several Reds fans have praised Struijk. They clearly appreciate the swift, heartfelt apology from the defender.

Many accept that it was a freak accident. Of course, some will have a different view. But most accept that all sides were just desperately unlucky.

With that in mind, here is the post that includes Struijk’s message, as well as some of the responses from Liverpool fans…
