Man United star who played full 90 mins v Everton could undergo surgery

Man United left-back Luke Shaw may at some point require surgical intervention to fix a persistent shoulder problem.

So says injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis. Shaw played the full 90 minutes as United were held at home to Everton on 2 October after he was passed fit by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He was forced off in the previous fixture, the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa, after just half an hour.

In his press conference pre-Everton, the manager revealed the 26-year-old had struggled with a “shoulder injury and been ill.”

The 18-cap international has since been named in the England squad for this month’s World Cup qualifier double-header.

But Dinnery predicts that Shaw could, at some point in the medium-term, need an operation to address his shoulder problems.

“It comes down to the extent of the injury,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“He has suffered from a shoulder problem for a while and it’s something they need to manage.

“With the illness, he came off early on the Saturday and was back at the training centre on the Tuesday.

“The shoulder was just a minor ailment and didn’t require intense therapy or rehab. He can do a lot of work himself, away from the training ground.

“Players at the highest level look after themselves and know what needs to be done. That’s not a massive issue.

“It may require surgical intervention further down the line. There may need to be a set period where he works specifically on that area.

“He needs to mobilise the joint, ensure that movement and that strength, but I doubt there’ll be any major complications.”
