Manchester City could see Spanish defender Pedro Porro return to the club based on Sporting Lisbon’s result in Europe on Wednesday.

According to O Jogo, the Portuguese giants are financially unable to pay the reported €8.5 million (£7.1 million) fee for Pedro Porro. The defender is in the second season of a two-year loan spell with Sporting.

The Lisbon side is keen to sign the full-back from City on a permanent deal and an agreement was seemingly reached a few weeks ago. However, a twist in the tale could now see Pedro Porro return to Manchester in the summer.

The youngster has thrived at Sporting since joining on loan last year. Pedro Porro is a key reason why the Lisbon giants are back in the Champions League this season. However, Portuguese sides have been hit hard by the covid-19 pandemic.

Indeed, clubs are struggling financially and Sporting may be forced to miss out on Pedro Porro if they fail to qualify for the Round of 16. Clubs receive close to €10 million (£8.3 million) for progressing to the knock-out stages.

That’s why Wednesday’s clash is so important. A win against Borussia Dortmund would see Sporting progress to the Round of 16, meaning they could afford to sign Pedro Porro for good from City.

While Pedro Porro has made a name for himself in Portugal, a return to Manchester could be perfect for Pep Guardiola’s side as they would be able to ask for a bigger fee for the defender.

After all, big clubs are reportedly keen on Pedro Porro and City could set terms that would see the defender leave the club for more than £7.1 million in summer 2022. As per O Jogo, other clubs keen on the Spaniard include Real Madrid.
