Liverpool have lodged an offer to unsettled AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie, according to a report in Italy.

Kessie’s contract in Milan is expiring next summer and he will become a free agent. But the midfielder can negotiate with foreign teams from January. It does seem inevitable that a parting of ways between Kessie and Milan is on the cards with two parties a distance apart over a new contract.

Milan’s final salary offer worth around £5m a year has been rejected. As such, reports in Italy claim Kessie has informed the Serie A title chasers that he plans to leave next summer.

Antonio Conte’s Spurs were believed to be heading the queue for the 25-year-old. Furthermore, reports just before Christmas outlined the package put on the table at Spurs.

They were seemingly willing to pay him a deal worth £8.4m a season, which equates to £160,000 a week.

Now though, ANSA, via Sport Witness, reported late on Wednesday night, that Liverpool are more than in the running.

They explained that his goodbye is “more and more probable” after the Ivory Coast international “received a very interesting offer from Liverpool”.

Kessie future

The details of the offer have not been documented. But the counter-offer from the Reds will have Tottenham sweating.

Manchester United and PSG are also keen on Kessie. However, Spurs, according to the Daily Express, were well down the line with Kessie’s entourage. They claim an agreement is likely to be reached in the next week.

That would mean Kessie signing a pre-contract agreement to join the club next summer. But Liverpool’s apparent offer could now scupper Conte’s plans.

Jurgen Klopp has yet to replace Georginio Wijnaldum, who left for PSG last summer.
