Ralf Rangnick sets simple target for Manchester United players in 2022

The innovative German remains unbeaten after replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Old Trafford hot-seat.

Ralf Rangnick has shared a simple New Year target and resolution with his Manchester United players.

Having stepped into the breach after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November, the innovative German has safely negotiated his opening five games as interim manager – clocking up wins over Crystal Palace, Norwich City and Burnley.

One below-par display against Newcastle aside, it has been a relatively smooth bedding-in process.

Initially set to remain in charge until the end of this season – before moving upstairs in an advisory role – Rangnick takes responsibility for silverware charges in the FA Cup and Champions League.

He will also be expected to push for top-four and seal qualification, once again, for that marquee competition.

However, as United prepare to welcome Wolves to Old Trafford on Monday afternoon (5.30pm), the ex-RB Leipzig coach has played down expectations.

Speaking to the MUFC website, Rangnick said: “Just keep developing the team.

“This is my job and it’s not so much thinking about the end of the season, nobody can foresee that.

“We can look into the crystal ball, but we will not get the answers. For us, it’s about taking the next steps and also developing this group of players.”

Aside from his on-field targets, the German will have one eye on incomings and outgoings, too, as United prepare to get down to business during the January transfer window.

Decisions will need to be made over Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard – both into the final month of their contracts – while the Premier League giants continue to be linked with notable defensive midfield recruits.
