Manchester City are gunning for more trophies and Pep Guardiola warned that it needs to stay that way at a top club

Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City is in a better position to win trophies because they are used to it.

The Blues have won eight major titles in the last four seasons including three Premier League titles, and are in with the chance of winning another three over the next few months. They head to Southampton on Sunday looking to book their place in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Guardiola remains grateful to his bosses for persevering with him after a trophyless first campaign at the Etihad, and also stressed the importance of previous managers Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini in bringing silverware to the club. Mancini followed up the FA Cup in 2011 with the league title the following season, while Pellegrini won the league cup twice as well as the league once.

Liverpool and Chelsea are looking to add more trophies to their current projects, while United is desperately trying to get back into the habit after going a fifth consecutive year without winning anything. From the experience of Guardiola – a man who is used to winning trophies – the longer the drought the harder it is to recover.

“Winning trophies help give confidence. You feel stronger, you feel we can do it again,” he said. “When we for a long time didn’t win, the first step was huge credit.”When you can make that first step like Roberto and then Manuel [Pellegrini], did, it is to their huge credit. Maybe we could not be here without that. Investment for the squad, good players who arrived a decade ago helps us to be who we are.

“I never forget the past. Never, never ever. I always give a lot of thanks that all managers and sporting directors help us to build in terms of mentality and belief for the club, the workers, the people that we can do it. It is more important than people expect.

“That’s why when you don’t win for three, four, five, or six years, every year is more difficult. It looks easier but it is more difficult. As much as you win, it is easier. That’s why when you don’t win titles, try to break [the cycle] quicker – otherwise, it will be more difficult.”
