Liverpool has reportedly rekindled their interest in Rennes and Belgium ace Jeremy Doku.

According to Calciomercato, the Reds are mulling over whether to make a move for the 19-year-old.

Liverpool already has some history with Doku, who came close to joining the Reds four years ago.

“I talked a lot with Mane”

The player and his family visited the Anfield club’s facilities amid a flurry of interest from Europe’s elite.

Last year, the teenage star spoke of his time visiting Liverpool.

“I was going to be 16 and that was the age you can sign a pro contract,” Doku told Ouest-France, via the Liverpool Echo.

“A lot of teams came to see me.

“Everyone talks about Liverpool because it was the most concrete interest but there was also Arsenal and Chelsea.”

He added: “I was able to discuss with Jurgen, Mane, Wijnaldum… Gerrard too. I talked a lot with Mane but we didn’t really talk about football.

“We talked about everything. He told me that I was young, that I still had time, he wasn’t trying to convince me or to say to me ‘come here, you will succeed’.”

In the end, Doku opted to remain with Anderlecht, making his breakthrough at the Belgian club.

And in 2020, he moved to French outfit Rennes for a reported £23.4million fee.

Doku has certainly made the right choices, as he’s now a regular for club and country.

“€100million”

Rennes president Nicolas Holbeck addressed the topic of Doku’s future with the media ahead of Euro 2020.

He stressed it would take a substantial offer for the club to even consider a sale.

“Looking at his potential, it’s possible that he will be solicited with offers this summer,” Chronicle Live quoted him as saying.

“But it’s clear that he’ll be with us next season.

“If there’s an offer of €100million (around £83million), we’ll consider it.”

“If they like me, they’ll come back”

To date, Doku has clocked up 53 Rennes appearances and 10 caps for Belgium.

Surely it won’t be long before he takes the next step in his career and joins an elite club.

Doku certainly hasn’t forgotten about Liverpool, and he’s confident Jurgen Klopp hasn’t forgotten about him either.

He told Ouest-France: “I know what my trajectory had to be.

“I know what route I needed to take and I knew at that moment I needed to stay at Anderlecht.

“As soon as I’m asked if I regret it, I always say no.

“Because if Liverpool came to me at 15, if they like me, they’ll come back later, that’s certain. It’s up to me to be playing well.”
