Liverpool know answer to Luis Díaz summer transfer repeat as double FSG priority clear

After an unprecedented season, this summer will probably not be one of major spending for Liverpool, as some in the depths of social media might hope.

Big money signings are always an alluring aspect of the transfer window, but in reality, Liverpool does not require major maneuvering in the squad have done its business ahead of time. The truth is that there are merely cosmetic adjustments that are needed to be made this summer.

That is especially true considering the arrival of Luis Díaz, who has changed the dynamics of Liverpool’s attack and has given Jürgen Klopp’s side a new lease of life that has allowed them to compete on all four fronts heading into the last month of the season.

Since the African Cup of Nations, there has been a consensus among supporters that there is a void in Liverpool’s attack on the right. Without an adequate backup option of the same ilk as Díaz on the left-wing, some have felt that this would be an area FSG would look to address this summer.

But in recent months that has become less and less of an issue. Díaz and Jota have both covered for Salah on the right wing, and there are high hopes for Kaide Gordon to continue his development in pre-season this summer and rise up through the ranks at Anfield.

Therefore, this summer the focus for FSG’s new sporting director should not be on signing another Díaz, but instead on renewing the contract of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané, who are both set to enter the final year of their current deals meaning they could be approached by clubs from abroad in merely six months time.

While both will be 30 by the end of the year, which may seem like a veteran age in football, modern science has enabled players to maintain a high level at the top for longer and longer. Luka Modric is still excelling at 36 years of age at Real Madrid and James Milner is doing the same at Liverpool at the same age.

Given the precedence of other players like Cristiano Ronaldo, who is 37 and still going strong, FSG should have no qualms giving a three or four-year extension to both of their top attacking stars.

If they both extend, the need for Liverpool to add another attacker becomes less of a pressing concern. Salah has hardly been injured during his time at Anfield and next season he will face an extended period of rest between the months of November and December as the World Cup is set to take place, where Egypt will not be competing.

Meanwhile, Mané has proved this season he can play through the middle and on both flanks since Díaz’s arrival giving Klopp extra depth in every department and his versatility has reduced the need to add an extra pair of legs into Liverpool’s current attacking quintet.

In that environment, a new attacker would simply be a luxury, and given the club’s contract situation, it would be a luxury FSG have to cast aside in order to make sure the necessary business gets done first. That is Julian Ward’s priority this summer and one that could determine the trajectory of Liverpool’s future.
