Lionel Messi has spoken out about his summer transfer to PSG, revealing that he had no intention of leaving Barcelona until his hand was forced.

Lionel Messi has revealed that he had ‘no plans to leave Barcelona before joining PSG last summer.

Messi left Barcelona for Paris last summer after the Catalan club was unable to re-sign the Argentine superstar. However, the 34-year-old has struggled to reach similar heights in France, and his struggles in Ligue 1 have earned him criticism from fans.

And Messi has spoken out about the ‘crazy’ move that made headlines last summer. “It was really difficult to understand what happened, I wasn’t expecting to leave Barcelona – it was a shock,” he told Argentine news outlet TyC Sports.

Messi went on: “In Barcelona, I had everything. I emigrated when I was very young. Furthermore, I spent more time in Barcelona than in Argentina.

“The truth is that I had no intention of changing anything. Fortunately, the children’s adaptation was fantastic. It was more difficult for Antonella and me.

“I’m confident that next season with Paris Saint-Germain will be much better for me.” It was difficult to recover from that crazy summer.”

Messi’s arrival had been with one eye on the Champions League trophy that has proved so elusive for the Parisian side.

However, an incredible turnaround against Real Madrid saw Messi and company eliminated from the competition: “The Real Madrid game happened, and that killed us.”

“To me, the entire dressing room, and the entire city of Paris. We all had high hopes for the competition, and the outcome was disappointing.”
