Mikel Arteta alters Arsenal’s transfer plans as optimism grows over his £40 million signing.

According to reports, Mikel Arteta is reconsidering his plans for Arsenal’s summer rebuild and may only sign three players this summer.

The Gunners overhauled their squad last summer, spending nearly £160 million to reshape the team.

Although they came close to returning to the Champions League via the top four, they were beaten by north London rivals Tottenham.

According to The Sun, Arteta had hoped to sign up to seven new players in the upcoming transfer window, but those plans have been scaled back.

Arteta may have to settle for only three new recruits to add to his already small squad if he does not qualify for Champions League football next season.

According to the report, the north London club is growing increasingly confident in their ability to sign Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus.

The 25-year-old will be familiar with Arteta from his time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at the Etihad Stadium.

Jesus has just over a year left on his current City contract, and the Gunners believe a £40 million bid will be enough to clinch the deal.

‘I’m looking to see what’s best for me and, above all, for my career,’ the player said after scoring in Brazil’s 5-1 win over South Korea on Thursday.

‘We’ll see what works best starting Tuesday.’

Arsenal’s transfer targets for the midfield position include Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans, as well as cover for Kieran Tierney.
