A major Liverpool update has been issued, with negotiations for a £220,000-per-week star now taking precedence.

According to James Pearce, Liverpool’s next priority after signing Darwin Nunez is to extend Mohamed Salah’s contract.

The Uruguayan is expected to play alongside Salah in the new Premier League season after a €100 million transfer fee was agreed upon.

While it is heartbreaking to see an era end with Sadio Mane’s departure from the club, a new one is about to begin.

And Liverpool wants to ensure it doesn’t end a year from now due to a Mo Salah free-agent exit with his contract set to expire at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Mohamed Salah’s contract extension is now Liverpool’s priority

After signing Darwin Nunez, Liverpool is prioritising reaching an agreement over Mohamed Salah’s contract extension.

The Egyptian once again broke the 30-goal mark for the Reds last season and also provided 16 assists, having a hand in a total of 47 goals for Liverpool.

Negotiations over a new contract for Salah have been prioritized, according to James Pearce of the Athletic.

Salah “has yet to receive a better offer since the season ended,” he says.

According to a previous report from the Athletic and Pearce, Salah has wage demands that would make him the world’s sixth-highest paid player.

Liverpool made an offer in the region of £258,000 per week.

Just 15 percent more than his current wage.

Completing Salah’s contract extension would be a signal of intent

After signing Darwin Nunez for €100M, completing Salah’s contract extension would be a signal of intent to Liverpool’s rivals.

It won’t be cheap, but unless Liverpool has their sights set on a young player who Jurgen Klopp can take to new heights, keeping Salah is a no-brainer.

Despite a disappointing second half of the 2021/22 season, the Egyptian still scored and assisted on 47 goals.

If he had been able to maintain his goal-scoring form after the AFCON, the numbers he would have amassed would have been truly terrifying.
