‘CONFIDENT’: ARSENAL ARE ‘THE FRONTRUNNERS’ TO SIGN PLAYER WHO ‘WON’T BE CHEAP,’ SAYS JOURNALIST

Speaking on The Done Deal Show, CBS journalist Ben Jacobs has been discussing Lisandro Martinez amid ongoing transfer speculation.

The Argentine defender has been the subject of interest from both Manchester United and Arsenal, and over the past 24 hours, there have been growing rumours that Martinez will be on his way to Old Trafford.

However, according to Jacobs, Arsenal are very much the frontrunners for the defender’s signature after submitting two bids for the Ajax ace.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, Martinez won’t be cheap with Jacobs stating that a fee of more than £40m will be needed to land the 24-year-old.

WHAT’S BEEN SAID?

Jacobs shared what he knows about Martinez.

“My understanding on this deal is that Arsenal are still very much the frontrunners, they are going to have to pay in excess of £40m, probably more like the mid 40s with add-ons on top of that, so this won’t be cheap,” Jacobs said.

“But Arsenal sources, speaking to them, albeit 48 hours ago, the last update I got on it was that they’re working on it, they’re confident, they’re hoping to table another offer and they believe they will reach an agreement to get that deal to the point where they can talk to the player.”

MORE APPEALING

Arsenal are seemingly leading Manchester United in this race, and it’s not hard to understand why the Emirates would be the more appealing destination for the Argentine right now.

Mikel Arteta’s project is coming together nicely, while Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United are still seemingly in disarray behind the scenes.

Factor in that the Red Devils’ defensive partnership of Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane may be tough to penetrate, and you can understand why Martinez may be more inclined to join Arsenal than United.
