Dean Saunders claims Robert Lewandowski would be a much better signing for Chelsea this summer than Richarlison amid reported interest in both.

Chelsea reportedly attempted a late hijack to try sign Everton forward Richarlison, who now looks set to complete a £60million transfer to Tottenham. The 25-year-old Brazilian star has proven his Premier League quality in recent seasons with Everton, so has earned a big transfer to join a Champions League club.

In contrast, Bayern Munich’s £329,000-a-week striker Lewandowski has been one of the world’s very best for a number of years. The 33-year-old star is someone the Blues have reportedly approached to sign, but there’s competition from Barcelona for his signature.

Saunders votes Lewandowski for Chelsea

ESPN pundit Saunders thinks Chelsea need a centre-forward that’s “guaranteed goals” like Lewandowski, rather than more of an unknown in Richarlison.

He’s been discussing the forward situation at Stamford Bridge following Romelu Lukaku’s confirmed exit on a season-long loan to Inter Milan.

“Lukaku’s gone, what are they going to do?” Saunders told talkSPORT.

“Lewandowski is your man. A proven goalscorer, not someone they’re going to gamble on.

“Richarlison is a gamble. You wouldn’t be surprised if he got 15 goals, and you wouldn’t be surprised if he got five. Lewandowski is not and I think Chelsea need a ready-made [striker], guaranteed goals.”

Super Lewa

It seems a fairly obvious statement to say you’d prefer Lewandowski over Richarlison. However, there’s an eight-year gap between the Bayern frontman and the Everton attacker.

Chelsea continue to get it wrong in the transfer market when it comes to signings proven goalscorers. Surely, Lewandowski wouldn’t fall into the same trap if he ended up at the Bridge.

The Poland star has 344 goals in 375 Bayern appearances.
