‘We can’t afford it,’ CEO says of reported Liverpool interest in a ‘wonderful’ player.

Borussia Dortmund’s CEO outlines what the plan is for Jude Bellingham and any transfer after the World Cup. Liverpool has a strong interest.

Borussia Dortmund CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke admits there are plans to talk with Jude Bellingham after the World Cup. The club needs to figure out how to handle the player as most of Europe’s major clubs plot a transfer in 2023.

Watzke admits that if Bellingham does want to leave, Dortmund will facilitate a transfer.

“I think as soon as the World Cup is over, we’ll have a basic conversation about what he would actually like to do,” he told Bild. “[We’ll discuss it] with him, with his parents, with whom we have a very close relationship, and of course with his advisor.

“And then he should simply say whether he wants to stay or whether he wants to go. Either way, we’ll discuss it pleasantly and reasonably.

‘But when the big ones in Europe are there, we can’t afford to fight financially. If Jude and his family say they want to stay in Dortmund, we’ll find a solution, and if not, we’ll also find a solution.

“Jude is a wonderful boy. He is certainly one of the greatest talents in European football.”

Jude Bellingham transferred after the World Cup

As per the Athletic, Liverpool retains a strong interest in Bellingham. Not that they’re shocking anyone with that news – the Reds’ desire to sign the midfielder is an open secret.

Watzke is right, though. Bellingham could decide to stick around with Dortmund for another year or two. He’s only 19, after all, and there’s no great rush to move from a club where he’s thriving.

At the same time, here’s an opportunity to make a gigantic transfer and place himself as a key player at one of the world’s top clubs. Maybe that’s Liverpool, maybe it’s Manchester City, maybe it’s Real Madrid.

Taking that opportunity when it arrives is important to most. A bad injury or a season of poor form will take it away, completely out of your control.

We do expect Bellingham to move, then, and Liverpool simply must be at the front of the queue.
