It was hard to have too many complaints with Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to pursue a deal for Anthony Gordon during the summer transfer window.
Gordon was a shining light in a dismal season for Everton last year. Other than Richarlison and Jordan Pickford perhaps, no single player did more to keep the Toffees in the Premier League.
And with that, Tottenham was very keen to sign the 21-year-old. In fact, reports from The Sun claimed at one stage that Spurs made a £100 million bid for both Gordon and Richarlison.

Meanwhile, Give Me Sport suggested that Tottenham remained very keen on Gordon as the deadline loomed.
It was suggested that Gordon was valued at £60 million.
For some, that may have seemed like decent value. Gordon has been described as a ‘sensational‘ talent. And it is no surprise that Everton valued him so highly given their struggles right now.
However, just a few months on, it would possibly be fair to suggest that Tottenham may have actually had something of a lucky escape, not meeting the Toffees’ demands.
Everton looks to be in big trouble once again this season. And Gordon is not hitting the heights right now. He has scored just three goals in 14 appearances in the Premier League.
He is also yet to contribute an assist. According to FBRef meanwhile, he has only made eight key passes so far. More than 100 players have managed more in the Premier League this season.
Of course, Gordon is only a young player. He will have moments this season where he steals the show.
But Spurs are on a completely different level from Everton. It is hard to look at his form for the Toffees and think that he could prove to be a player worth £60 million for Antonio Conte’s side.
Conte’s summer signings have found it difficult enough trying to force their way into his plans.
Tottenham goes into the January window still with an opportunity to achieve something special this season. Having that £60 million up their sleeve in the winter could make a huge difference.
Perhaps they will have a fresh look at Gordon. But surely, they have reason to go nowhere near offering £60 million as he toils for the Toffees.
