England advances to the World Cup quarterfinals thanks to two assists from Foden.

Following Jordan Henderson’s opener, Phil Foden provided assists for Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka’s goals on either side of halftime.

Gareth Southgate’s side teed up a last-eight clash with current holders France on Saturday, with Foden, Kyle Walker, and John Stones all starting (19:00 UK).

Walker, who returned to the squad for the final group game against Wales, played his first 90-minute game in more than two months, while Jack Grealish and Kalvin Phillips came on as second-half substitutes.

England made a sluggish start to the game, with Stones coming closest to opening the scoring from Foden’s out-swinging cross with a flicked-over effort.

Senegal’s high press made it difficult for England’s defense and they were almost caught out twice by quick turnovers.

After giving the ball away, Ismaila Sarr fired over from close range and moments later, Jordan Pickford made a strong save from Boulaye Dia.

England finally put a sweeping move together in the 38th minute, which started with a neat flick from Foden and ended with Henderson turning in Jude Bellingham’s square pass.

And the second came on the stroke of half-time with another strong break from Bellingham before Foden laid a pass into Kane to score his first goal of the World Cup.

The City winger then teed up a third 10 minutes into the second half when he rode a tackle before delivering a perfect low cross for Saka to finish.

With the victory all but secured, Foden was replaced by Etihad team-mate Grealish in the 65th minute and Phillips came on shortly after, to ensure there was no chance of a comeback.

City’s England stars join Argentina’s Julian Alvarez and Nathan Ake, from the Netherlands, in the quarter-finals.
