The England team’s match against Senegal was ‘leaked,’ according to James Maddison.

Latest Leicester City news from LeicestershireLive as Paul Ince talks about James Maddison’s role with England at the World Cup

Former England and Man United midfielder Paul Ince have backed Leicester City’s James Maddison to make a difference in the World Cup knockout stages.

England faces Senegal this evening (Sunday) in the round of 16, and Leicester midfielder Maddison is yet to play a single minute at the tournament. After missing the games against Iran and the United States through injury, the 26-year-old made the bench against Wales but was an unused substitute.

That record looks set to continue, as it has been reported that Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, and Bukayo Saka are due to start the game, as will Phil Foden, according to talkSPORT.

Speaking about England’s midfield ahead of the game against Senegal, Reading boss Ince said of Maddison: “He will want to play, but you have to look at the team,” Ince told ICE36 Live Casino. “Mount seems to be the one that plays there, Foden can play there.

“He will always have two of Bellingham, Rice, Phillips, and Henderson, so my advice to him will be to keep training well and enjoy the experience. He needs to give Southy something to think about and that starts with having that desire and enthusiasm in training.”

Insisting Maddison will be needed at some point during the tournament, Ince added: “Look at Maddison’s quality. In knockout football you never know when the quality that he possesses will be needed – it could be a free kick, or it could be to unlock a team late in the game.

“He has to be ready and can’t afford to get frustrated. I think it was unfortunate that he was injured in the first game, that didn’t help. I feel like he may have been given some minutes in the Iran match, but other players have jumped the queue because of how they’ve performed. I’m sure that he will be ready when the time comes.”
