Defending player returns to training for Man City ahead of match against Liverpool

Prior to Manchester City’s EFL Cup match against Liverpool, Kyle Walker resumed training, but it is unclear how much of a role he will play in the round of 16 matches.

Pep Guardiola recently gave the 32-year-old a break after the Three Lions were eliminated earlier in December while he was representing England at the World Cup in Qatar.

Walker might be available for selection now that he has resumed training, but Pep will probably limit his playing time given that he missed a significant amount of the season due to injury and even underwent surgery.

This season, the 32-year-old has played in just eight games across all competitions, totaling a pitiful 653 minutes. Walker has been replaced as the right-back by John Stones and Manuel Akanji, but Guardiola will be desperate for his first choice to be available.

Walker will be essential to City’s efforts to retain their Premier League title, so Pep may decide to rest the 32-year-old for the EFL Cup and turn to Rico Lewis in his place. Another choice is Joao Cancelo, but he too might escape.

Other news: There is evidence that Cole Palmer might play in an EFL Cup match.
