Manchester City enjoyed a 3-2 win over Liverpool in Thursday’s EFL Cup clash and Julian Alvarez was one name left out of the matchday squad. The 22-year-old won the World Cup with Argentina on December 18, so he’s been given a much-needed rest from club duties.

Alvarez featured in every game for Argentina in Qatar, amassing 467 minutes of playing time from a possible 630. He scored an impressive four goals with one assist and was on the pitch for 103 minutes for the final against France. Pep Guardiola said fans may not see him until 2023, however, as he needs some time off.

The 22-year-old started five consecutive games for Argentina and Guardiola told reporters: “We’re delighted for Julian, his contribution was amazing for the team.

“One of our players is a world champion. Ten days will be his week of vacation. He engaged in a lot of stressful games. He’ll take a break, perhaps during the last weeks before the new year. Alvarez has played 20 times for City this season across all competitions, with two assists and seven goals.

He has excelled for both club and country, and he appears to have a promising future. As a result, he deserves a break so that he can come back even stronger. On December 28, City will play Leeds United, but it doesn’t seem like Alvarez will be a selection factor.

Yan Couto has been linked to a return to Man City, although Pep Guardiola is unlikely to employ him.
