Manager says 3-0 loss might be target of Liverpool and Newcastle’s final game, adding that “things happen.”

Liverpool and Newcastle’s chances of acquiring Enzo Fernandez from Benfica have slightly improved.

Jürgen Klopp is reportedly eager to sign the Argentina international, according to O Jogo in Portugal.

Newcastle is interested in signing Fernandez, according to the Daily Mail among other places.

By issuing a formal statement on the South American and stating that he would stay until at least the end of the season, Benfica put an end to rumors of an impending departure earlier this week.

The fire has now been fueled by Benfica manager Roger Schmidt.

The 55-year-old did not say whether Fernandez’s farewell match for Benfica would be Friday’s 3-0 loss to Braga.

Schmidt said: “I don’t know if this was Enzo’s last match, he’s a wonderful player,” as reported by Fabrizio Romano. In football, situations occasionally arise that need the player to make choices. We’ll see what happens over the coming weeks.

Many did not expect the 21-year-old to start against Braga last night, after his exploits for Argentina at the World Cup.

However, Fernandez is an important player for Benfica and Schmidt, so he was called upon despite O Jogo stating that he would sit out against Braga in order to avoid an injury, which would potentially ruin a transfer.

The Argentine has a release clause worth €120m (£105m) written into his contract, which Benfica are referring interested parties to – they seemingly have no desire to accept anything below that amount.

NEWCASTLE COULD BEAT LIVERPOOL TO ENZO FERNANDEZ

According to A Bola in Portugal, Newcastle could soon meet the £105m release clause.

The Portuguese news outlet believes Benfica are worried about the Magpies throwing their wealth around this winter and triggering their No.13’s release clause.

Newcastle can undoubtedly afford to pay that sum because of Saudi Arabia’s financial support, although Liverpool’s financial strength is less impressive.

Keep a watch on this scenario since Schmidt’s remarks have given the saga new life.
