Manchester City has been in talks with CA Velez Sarsfield about a trade for Maximo Perrone since December, but it looks like they’ve made some progress and could finalize the deal this week.

The city is set to complete the deal in the coming days, according to Simon James and Lewis Browning of the Daily Mail, making the 18-year-old their first acquisition of the January transfer window.

And whether they intend to bring in more this month remains to be seen after Pep Guardiola ruled out a major mid-season spending spree. Perrone just turned 20 and would be up against Rodri and Kalvin Phillips, thus he hasn’t been signed to play yet.

Perrone will join City following the South American U-20 Championship for a fee of £6.5 million. Benfica, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Newcastle United were all interested in signing the defensive midfielder.

Perrone’s future in the first team or loaned out is uncertain, and it may be determined by how he performs when Pep Guardiola gets a good look at him.
