‘The one’: Antonio Conte wants Tottenham to sign the £53 million star above all others.

The central defender is Alessandro Bastoni. Antonio Conte prefers Tottenham to sign more players than any other club.

That’s according to Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail, who discussed potential transfer business on The Spurs Chat Podcast.

Spurs do not appear to be interested in signing a new central defender this month, possibly because they do not believe there is a suitable candidate on the market in the middle of the season.

Or perhaps they do not want to spend a fortune this month, and the players they want to sign for Conte are more expensive than they are willing to pay now.

Conte wants Bastoni in his defense.
“In terms of the one you keep hearing, it’s Bastoni,” Mokbel said of potential Tottenham central defensive targets.

“He is the one player that Antonio Conte would potentially love the most to bring to his team.

“But I think they have bigger fish to fry, never say never in January, but a center half hasn’t really crossed my radar [yet].”

Spurs tried hard to sign Bastoni in the summer, when he was valued at 60 million euros (£52.7 million) but were unable to do so before signing Clement Lenglet on loan.

Bastoni’s Inter contract expires in 2024, and despite turning down Spurs to stay in Italy during the summer, he has yet to sign a new one.

Despite the situation, it appears that the man they signed for 31 million euros (£27.2 million) in August 2017 will not be cheap.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Conte will commit his future to Spurs, an issue that has dragged on for a month when it might have been hoped that the situation could have been resolved during the World Cup mid-season break.
