Newcastle United is reportedly interested in Lille defender Tiago Djalo, according to reports in France.
According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle is “ready to offer” a fee in excess of €20 million for the versatile 22-year-old.
The player is approaching the end of his contract with Lille and will be familiar with fellow center-back Sven Botman, having played alongside the big Dutchman at LOSC.
Djalo is primarily a central defender, but he can play on either flank, having appeared at right-back 12 times and left-back 11 times in the last two seasons.
He stands 6ft 3′ tall and is known for his impressive turn of pace, which may explain why the Ligue 1 side frequently uses him as a full-back.
The former Portugal U21 international joined the 2021 champions three and a half years ago for €4 million from AC Milan.
Time will tell whether we are truly interested in Djalo, but he certainly checks all the boxes as a young, athletic, and versatile defender who could compete with an in-form but aging Fabian Schar.
