One deal that occurred on deadline day stunned Spurs players, according to reports.

Football.London report that Tottenham’s players were shocked by the sudden permanent departure of right-back, Matt Doherty, on deadline day.

The Irish international joined Spurs from Wolves two and a half years ago and had established himself as a popular figure within the team. His departure came as a surprise to many as it was initially reported that he was only headed out on loan.

According to reports, Doherty was initially expected to leave Spurs on loan to join Atletico Madrid, but in a surprising turn of events, his contract was terminated at the eleventh hour.

This was due to Tottenham having reached their FIFA loan limit. As a result, much to the chagrin of the Spurs players, Doherty signed a permanent contract with Atletico Madrid.

The players, who had grown fond of Doherty, were reportedly shocked by his sudden release.

Doherty wasn’t necessarily Spurs’ best player, but he always gave it his all and looked to have strong relationships with others at the club, making him a valuable asset to the team.

Doherty’s release raises questions about Tottenham’s backroom strategy, as it shows that they may not have thought through their loan limits and the impact it would have on their squad.

Letting Doherty go on a free is a missed opportunity, this is surely a player who had some resale value, and perhaps if Spurs had realized they couldn’t have loaned him out sooner, they would have been able to make a sale.

Doherty’s release from Tottenham was a shock to many and highlights the need for the club to consider the impact of their transfer decisions on the squad as a whole.

Doherty was a popular and experienced player, and his presence in the dressing room may well be missed by the Spurs squad.
