Eddie Howe problems Alexander Isak’s injury status at Newcastle United has been updated.

Isak did not play in today’s 1-1 Premier League draw at St James’ Park against West Ham United. Newcastle’s fourth-placed team was on target through Callum Wilson.

The 23-year-old had been forced off against Southampton four days earlier after being struck on the head by a ball, and Howe has revealed that the club was following concussion protocols.

“Unfortunately, we had to follow concussion protocols with him, so we knew right away after the game that we’d be without him today,” United’s head coach explained.

“Big blow for us, because he’s looked so good when he’s come on to the pitch in recent weeks. He feels good, he feels fine, and I don’t believe he has any problems. I’m confident he’ll be fine for the game against Bournemouth next week.”

Meanwhile, West Ham manager David Moyes believed his relegation-threatened team deserved a point for their efforts.

“We deserve some credit because we haven’t been playing well,” Moyes said. “I thought we played exceptionally well today.

“They’re a massive side. When they don’t go around you, they can put the ball on top of you. Nayef (Aguerd) made an outstanding tackle (to stop Wilson). Part of your job is to defend, and we did so admirably today.

“A draw at Newcastle isn’t the worst outcome. We’d like to win, but we’re up against a team that is in good form right now.”
