Former Manchester United defender Danny Simpson believes his old club should consider re-signing Wilfried Zaha this summer.

Zaha is nearing the end of his contract at Selhurst Park and will have plenty of options if he decides to leave this summer.

The Ivory Coast international moved to Manchester United in 2013 but only made four appearances under David Moyes before being loaned out to Cardiff City six months later.

The following season, Zaha returned to Crystal Palace, where he has been one of the Premier League’s brightest talents ever since, with Simpson naming Liverpool as one of the clubs in need of a player of his caliber.

While he believes there will be plenty of clubs interested, he would like to see United sign the 30-year-old, as he is excited about the prospect of working with Marcus Rashford.

‘It’s a difficult question, he can go wherever he wants, especially on a free transfer in the summer,’ Simpson, who came through the ranks at United before winning the Premier League with Leicester City, told Stadium Astro.

‘I believe Wilf performs better as the main man. I know he was much younger when he joined United, but if he joins another top four top sides, he won’t be the main man.

‘So it will be interesting to see where he goes, but I think somewhere like Liverpool could do with him because it is not happening for them right now.’

Sir Alex Ferguson’s final signing before retiring as manager was Zaha. United agreed on a deal with Palace in January 2013, with the youngster staying at Selhurst Park for the rest of the season as Ferguson’s side won the league.

Simpson, who is eager to see Zaha return to Old Trafford, believes his time at the club would have been very different if Ferguson had stayed.

‘I’d bring him back here,’ Simpson explained. ‘With Marcus Rashford at No. 9 and Wilfried on the left, that is some firepower.

Sir Alex Ferguson signed him, and then he left. Moyes was obviously brought in, and it didn’t work out.

‘I honestly believe that if Sir Alex had been the manager when Wilfried Zaha signed, we would have seen a different Wilfried Zaha at Manchester United.’
